STEM-IT-Forward a fresh non-profit organisation is taking strides in raising the STEM flag higher in the Southern African regions. Their current initiative

Taungana is a movement that provides African high school girls from rural disadvantaged communities with a world-class opportunity to access and explore the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Taungana's key programmes are the flagship annual STEM Expo and STEM Evangelism programmes in participating country rural communities.

Taungana is hosting its Premier STEM Expo in Johannesburg from the 24 - 30 August 2014. The Expo theme is - Decoding STEM Careers!. This premier event will see a targeted 30 girls from rural South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe come to Johannesburg to get real life exposure to STEM careers from high fliers in South African STEM giants, access to STEM career advancement opportunities and most importantly - they will be equipped to be STEM ambassadors in their own communities. Our 2014 industry hosts include BMW SA, Eskom, AngloAmerican, NECSA (Nuclear Energy Corporation of South Africa) and Innovation Hub to mention a few. Sci-Bono Discovery Centre, SAASTA (South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement) and the Department of Science and Technology have given tremendous resource material support for the educational components of the 7 day programme. Sponsors to date include Techwomen, Necsa, Subz Washable Pads, Global Connections for Women, Black Girls Code and Lil-Lets

On the 29th July, 6 – 9pm a fundraising network event will be hosted by STEM-IT-Forward at the historical Liliesleaf in Rivonia. This professional networking event seeks to engage exceptional attendees in STEM for Taungana programme awareness and call for individual and organizational support for the movement while providing a stimulating networking platform with STEM thought leaders and decision makers.

The panel which will be made up of high profile STEM professionals will converse on “The dynamics of STEM Careers – Using STEM to get a seat at the table”. They will give insight from different STEM angles and ages in South Africa and the continent in general. STEM_IT-Forward is calling for all STEM professionals to come and support this event.
